Deadline: 9 September 2026
What if your next Master’s degree took you to Beijing, was fully funded, and placed you in a global community of young leaders from around the world?
The Schwarzman Scholars Program 2027–2028 is now accepting applications for its next class at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.
This is a one-year, fully funded Master’s programme in Global Affairs, designed for young professionals and graduates who want to better understand China’s role in global affairs while developing their leadership skills and international networks.
And yes, the funding is the real deal.
What Is the Schwarzman Scholars Program?
Schwarzman Scholars is a highly selective international scholarship programme created to prepare the next generation of leaders for an increasingly interconnected world.
Selected Scholars spend one year at Schwarzman College at Tsinghua University, studying Global Affairs while taking part in leadership development, cultural experiences, mentorship and conversations with influential figures from different sectors.
The programme focuses on understanding China’s role in global trends, alongside broader questions around international affairs and leadership.
It is designed for people from different academic and professional backgrounds, meaning you don’t need to have studied a specific undergraduate subject to be considered.
What Does the Scholarship Cover?
This is where Schwarzman Scholars becomes particularly attractive.
Successful applicants receive a comprehensive fully funded scholarship, covering:
- Tuition and university fees
- Room and board
- Travel to and from Beijing
- In-country study tours
- Required course books and supplies
- A Lenovo laptop
- Health insurance
- A personal stipend
The programme also covers certain interview-related travel expenses for candidates invited to the selection stage.
So unlike scholarships that only waive tuition, Schwarzman Scholars is designed to cover the major costs associated with actually studying abroad.
What Will You Study?
The programme is centred around a Master’s degree in Global Affairs.
The curriculum explores China’s role in global affairs and the global economy while helping Scholars develop leadership skills through coursework, workshops, coaching, mentorship and interaction with academics and industry leaders.
Scholars also have opportunities for immersive learning through in-country study tours, giving them the chance to experience aspects of Chinese society, culture and commerce beyond the classroom.
The programme is therefore particularly interesting for people considering careers in:
- International relations
- Public policy
- Business and economics
- International development
- Global affairs
- Diplomacy
- Sustainability and development
- Leadership and entrepreneurship
Who Can Apply?
The Schwarzman Scholars programme is open to applicants from around the world, including African applicants.
For the 2027–2028 intake, candidates must:

What Makes This Scholarship Different?
Okay, this isn’t your average “submit your transcript and hope for the best” scholarship. 👀
Schwarzman Scholars places a major emphasis on leadership.
The selection process looks beyond academic performance and considers qualities such as leadership potential, intellectual ability, character and the ability to understand different perspectives.
You’ll also become part of an international network of Scholars and alumni spanning more than 100 countries and hundreds of universities.
That network can be just as valuable as the degree itself.
You’re studying in China, but you’re also spending a year surrounded by people from different countries, industries and backgrounds, all while exploring some of the biggest global issues of the moment.

TheOpHub Tip 💡
Don’t treat this like a normal scholarship application.
Schwarzman Scholars is looking closely at leadership, character and your vision for the future, so your essays need to tell a convincing story about who you are, what you’ve already done and where you want to go.
Don’t simply list every achievement you’ve ever had.
Instead, think about the moments where you actually took initiative, solved a problem, influenced others or created change, even if those experiences happened through university, volunteering, community projects or student organisations.
And please don’t leave this application until the last few hours. The official deadline is strict.
Final Word
A fully funded Master’s at one of China’s leading universities, international exposure, leadership development, a global network and the chance to spend a year in Beijing?
Yeah. This is a big one. 🇨🇳🌍
Schwarzman Scholars is extremely competitive, so there are no guarantees. But if you meet the eligibility requirements and have a strong story to tell about your leadership potential and future goals, there’s very little reason not to give it a shot.
And remember: you don’t need to come from a particular academic background. What matters is being able to show why this experience fits into the leader you’re becoming.
If it’s rare, hidden, or slept-on, TheOpHub finds it.
