A fully funded postgraduate opportunity is opening for talented students from Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi who want to pursue a Master’s degree at selected universities in the United Kingdom or South Africa.
The Beit Trust Postgraduate Scholarships support students in development-related fields and cover major study and living costs, including tuition, living allowances and travel.
For the next intake, UK scholarships are for programmes beginning in September 2027, while South African scholarships are for programmes beginning in January 2028.
Applications open on 1 December 2026.
About the Beit Trust Scholarship
The Beit Trust is a long-standing charitable organisation supporting development in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi.
Its postgraduate scholarship programme is designed for candidates who have strong academic potential, relevant professional experience and the leadership potential to contribute to the development of their home countries.
The Trust currently supports one-year taught MSc programmes in the UK and two-year taught MSc programmes in South Africa. It also supports a limited number of four-year MMed programmes in South Africa.
The Trust does not normally fund PhD research from the beginning of a doctoral programme.
What Does the Scholarship Cover?
Successful scholars receive substantial financial support, including:
- Full tuition and academic fees
- Living allowance
- Economy-class flights to and from the study destination
- UK visa costs and Immigration Health Surcharge
- TB testing and biometric costs
- Arrival allowance
- Laptop allowance
- Departure allowance
The Trust does not provide financial support for spouses or dependants.
Who Can Apply?
The scholarship is specifically for nationals and permanent residents of:
- Zimbabwe
- Zambia
- Malawi
Applicants must live in one of these countries and/or intend to return after completing their studies.
The Trust generally looks for candidates who have not already begun their postgraduate course.
Strong academic performance is important. Preference is given to applicants with a Distinction or Merit/Upper Second Class undergraduate degree, although applicants with lower classifications can still be considered.
Relevant professional experience is highly valued. The Trust states that around three years of professional experience, supported by a positive employer reference, can significantly strengthen an application.
However, three years is not an absolute requirement.
What Can You Study?
The Beit Trust focuses on disciplines that can contribute to economic and social development.
These include areas such as:
- Medicine and health
- Engineering
- Education
- Economic growth
- Agriculture
- Conservation
The categories are not exhaustive, but the Trust does not support MBA programmes.
Applicants must choose from the Trust’s partner universities.
For the UK partnerships, the current university-specific requirements are particularly important. For example, Strathclyde supports Engineering disciplines only, while the Trust’s St Andrews partnership is limited to Computer Science.
Partner Universities
Beit Trust scholars can apply to its approved partner universities in the UK and South Africa.
For UK applications, candidates must first apply directly to the partner universities and obtain an offer before submitting the Beit Trust scholarship application.
Conditional offers are accepted.
Applicants can apply to more than one partner university to improve their chances, and the Beit Trust application can include up to four proposed degree courses across the UK and/or South African partner universities.
Why This Scholarship Stands Out
This is not a general international scholarship open to applicants from every country.
Its geographic eligibility is deliberately narrow: Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi.
That makes it a particularly valuable opportunity for Southern African applicants who may be overlooked by large global scholarship programmes.
The scholarship is also designed around long-term development. Applicants are expected to explain how their postgraduate studies will benefit their country, and leadership potential, community involvement and professional experience are all considered during selection.
Application Timeline
The next Beit Trust scholarship round is for:
UK Partner Universities: Academic year beginning September 2027
South African Partner Universities: Academic year beginning January 2028
Applications open:
1 December 2026
Applications close:
12 February 2027
The Trust states that applications cannot be processed after the closing date.
What Documents Are Required?
Applicants should prepare their documents before beginning the online form.
The Trust requires:
- University offer letter for UK applicants, or proposed South African courses
- Degree certificates and academic transcripts
- Other academic certificates and achievements
- SAQA Certificate of Evaluation for eligible South African applications
- CV
- Personal statement of no more than 300 words
- Recent photograph
- Valid passport
- Three references: academic, character and employer where applicable
Applicants should note that the application form must be completed in one sitting and documents must be uploaded during the application.

How to Apply
UK applicants should first apply directly to one or more of the Beit Trust’s UK partner universities.
Once you have received your offer or offers, you can submit the Beit Trust scholarship application.
The Trust’s official website provides the current application button for the scholarship round.
Conclusion
The Beit Trust Postgraduate Scholarships are a rare opportunity specifically designed for postgraduate students from Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi.
With tuition, living support, travel and several additional study-related costs covered, the scholarship can significantly reduce the financial burden of pursuing postgraduate study abroad.
However, this is a competitive programme. Strong academics, relevant experience, leadership potential and a convincing explanation of how your studies will contribute to your home country can all strengthen an application.
If you are eligible, the most important thing to do now is research the partner universities and suitable Master’s programmes before applications open on 1 December 2026.
TheOpHub Tip
Don’t wait until December to start. UK applicants need to apply to the partner universities first and obtain an offer before submitting the Beit Trust application. Start researching suitable courses and university deadlines early so you have enough time to secure an offer before the scholarship deadline.
If it’s rare, hidden, or slept-on, TheOpHub finds it.
